Thursday Briefing – Political Blog

Something that I’ve been trying to follow since the summer — and don’t ask me why — is the EU’s telecoms package. It went through the various stages of the co-decision process, evolving from a horribly evil thing which would have violated the Spanish constitution and the privacy of European citizens, into a much more palatable, though far from perfect, set of regulations. Now apparently, it is may be withdrawn altogether by the Information Society Commissioner.

It seems just a tiny bit of a waste of everyone’s time and effort to pull the package back at this stage. Both sides of the argument on the package put a large amount of work into presenting their arguments, and the package as it stands now is the product of a Europe-wide democratic process, and scrutiny by the member states. Not sure where I’m going with this post, but I just can’t quite ‘get’ the logic of pulling the rug from underneath everyone like this.
